Neocities is pretty neato actually.
Hey, looks like I was able to mostly set up a not awful looking website in a couple days. I think that probably bodes well for when I inevitably gotta go back to real web-dev, haha. Firstly, I started off just setting up a basic about me page with some basic info and links, which wasn't too bad, but I wasn't super into the neocities web interface. Uploading one file at a time was a bit of a drag, and I also realized that a bunch of stuff I thought was baseline CSS was actually part of SCSS, so that was also cool to learn.
The good news is that I found the CLI tool for pushing up to here, and that sped up the process of devving the site a ton. Developing locally is a huge time-saver. You can find that CLI tool here: Neocities CLI
So, after getting my footing with a very 2004ish website lacking a lot of styling, I spent today adding a tasty cake recipe to the recipes section of the site, and adding some more pleasing styling. Most of the styling was pretty straightforward pixel-pushing, but I think I've hit a nice balance of modern-ish design, and comfy old-web text.
Overall, I'm pretty happy to have my own website that's more or less all under my control (or at least, I can download it and self-host it elsewhere if I really need to). I'll probably mostly use this website as a link repository for folks I meet in meatspace, and as a place to store some nice cooking recipes so I don't need to worry about random blogs with recipies I like link-rotting away, or being needlessly annoying with tons of extra junk I don't super care about. Here's to the small indie-web!
